Core Principles

The consortium is founded on the following core principles:

  • Disasters know no boundaries, they affect everyone in their wake
  • The numbers and scope of major disasters in the U.S. are on the rise
  • Programs and services must incorporate an “All Hazards” approach

About the Consortium

The WKU Disaster Science Operations Center (DSOC) is the nucleus of the Disaster Science Consortium. Developed as an “all-hazards” resource center, we have a variety of operational charges, including the following.

Bring together key elements of all five WKU academic colleges to focus on:

  • Applied research
  • Hazard analysis and problem solving
  • Community focused disaster support services
  • Enhanced cross functional educational opportunities centric to disasters

Developing member agreements with non-profits and community-based entities and assisting member organizations with a variety of services:

  • Weather Forecasting and Decision Support
  • Event preparedness planning and operations
  • Organizational risk assessment and plan development
  • Crisis response command and operations resources.

Join

Enrolling your organization or corporate entity into the WKU Disaster Science Consortium opens opportunities for research and information sharing that have benefits for the consortium, our students, and the communities we serve. There are multiple pathways and levels of support depending on the size and operational characteristics of the organization. These range from a basic membership to endowed scholarships and supported research projects.

Contact Dr. Durkee or Dr. Oliver to discuss opportunities to join the consortium to improve your organizations preparedness efforts, and move the Disaster Science programs forward.
